TOP U.S. COMMANDER QUESTIONS OBAMA'S PLAN TO SEND MORE TROOPS TO AFGHANISTAN (MUST WATCH VIDEO)

A top US commander has warned US troops face a "resilient" Taliban "aided" by al-Qaeda, as the US plans to deploy 17,000 more soldiers to Afghanistan. US General David McKiernan says concerted efforts to defeat the Taliban has only led to a stalemate. President Obama has ordered the 17,000 more troops into Afghanistan even before the US military has had time to review the Afghanistan mission.

The Republicans and Conservatives are thrilled with Obama's decision because by ordering more troops to Afghanistan the Afghanistan War has now become "Obama's War."

There are many who feel Afghanistan could be "Obama's Vietnam" just like Vietnam was the reason President Lyndon B. Johnson declined to run for re-election.

ARMY TIMES REPORTS 18 MILITARY SUICIDES IN FEBRUARY RELATED TO IRAQ/AFGHANISTAN WAR

18 deaths in February most likely suicides

By Michelle Tan - Staff writerPosted : Saturday Mar 7, 2009 10:40:06 EST
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/03/army_suicides_030509w/

As many as 18 soldiers killed themselves in February, Army officials announced March 5.
Of the 18 cases in February, two are confirmed as suicides and 16 others remain under investigation.

About 90 percent of such pending cases typically are ruled suicides.

Seventeen of the soldiers were male; one was female. Of the deaths, 14 occurred in the U.S. and four overseas.

Last month’s numbers are higher than the previous February, when 11 soldiers’ deaths were confirmed as suicides.

This February’s number represents a slight drop from as many as 24 suicides in January. Of the January deaths, 12 have been confirmed as suicides and 12 are suspected.

The January total was the highest monthly toll for the Army in nearly 30 years.

In 2008, the fourth year in a row the Army has seen an increase in suicides, 138 soldier deaths were confirmed as suicides, and five other cases are under investigation.
“The culture of the Army is that of a team, and any time one of our own feels so lost that he or she sees no other option than to take his or her life, we’ve failed as a force,” Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli said March 5. “This is not business as usual. We must move quickly to address this issue.”

In the short term, the Army is nearing the end of a 30-day stand-down period, ordered by Army leaders for Feb. 15 through March 15. During that time, commanders are spending two to four hours training their soldiers on issues such as recognizing suicidal behaviors and intervention at the buddy level.

The stand-down will be followed by a suicide prevention chain-teaching program, from March 15 to June 15.

The Army also is looking at several long-range programs, Chiarelli said.

“There’s no single solution in dealing with this challenge,” he said.

WHAT THE MEDIA DOESN'T TELL YOU ABOUT IRAQ'S HEALTH CARE CRISIS

The IRAQ state medical system is on its knees.
Dahr Jamail

IRAQ:Medical Care At Last, At a Price

for those who can find the dollars for it."Why would I want to go to government-run hospitals where there is no care, no functioning instruments, long lines, and in the end the same doctor who treats you there can treat you at a private hospital," says Mohammed Abbas, 35, an employee at Iraq's Ministry of Oil.

Abbas, speaking at the private Saint Raphael Hospital in the Karrada area of Baghdad, wanted treatment on time, and was prepared to pay for it. Like him, many are coughing up money for private treatment. When they have money, that is, in an economy with more than 50 percent unemployment.

For medical care, many scramble to find money somehow. "It is a catastrophe at the government-run hospitals," says Hayder Abud, 30, at the private hospital for a check-up. "When you finally get a doctor to see you there, they are so rushed and sleep deprived, you can't be sure you are getting proper treatment."

Most treatment at government hospitals is free.

Getting an x-ray at a private hospital may cost 40 dollars. But at a private hospital the job can get done on time. "Iraq's Ministry of Health is struggling," said Khaled, administrative manager at the Saint Raphael Hospital, requesting that his last name not be used. "We have had problems with the Ministry of Health because they are angry at us for treating so many more people nowadays."
